Gracias
I and my friend stayed at this hotel for Day of the Dead festival, 2012. It is part of a family owned business. Anna, a family member, is a high energy, hands-on manager who goes out of her way to make guests feel welcome. Her English is excellent. Like Anna, staff are very accommodating. The hotel is very pleasant. It is clean, comfortable, and nicely furnished (not luxuriously). Comfortable beds, lots of hot water. Our room was not large, but perfectly adequate; we were keen to spend our time out exploring the city and the area. No food service, but restaurants and all other amenities are nearby. I would happily stay here again, and recommend it to friends.
Very convenient to walk to many sights, the plazas and markets and resraurants. Staff was very pleasant and certainly tried to accomodate everyones needs, tho , not able to understand much English, so sometimes a bit hard too get directions etc. Nice garden to sit in and rear secure parking which was great for us. Our only complaints...no morning coffee available and perhaps a bigger issue is same price for all rooms when some are clearly better than others.t he room we had ,tho charmingly decorated ,was quite small (2 twin beds) as compared to room our friends had. In the end, tho, we would consider staying there again.
Reading the review below I see that we must have been given the "bridal suite" without even knowing it. Our experience at the hotel was somewhat different from the previous reviewer's though because we quite liked the place and found the staff very pleasant and accommodating. Of the four or five staff members we encountered in our two night stay all understood my Spanish perfectly, and while I have lived full time in Mexico for fourteen years now I do still retain my "Canadian accent". They were helpful and attentive in everything providing directions, answering general questions and when I complained that the light in the stairwell inside our room was burned out they immediately resolved the issue. We actually had two rooms, our friend had room #3 a fairly large room with windows that over looked a large patio. His bathroom was large and his bed looked to be a double but it may have been larger. He said he slept very well and found the bed and the room very comfortable. I loved our room, it was private and very airy with a wooden shuttered window that opened fully on each wall. The lake was visible from the window on the back wall. This room is accessed by walking up a tall spiral staircase (about 1.5 regular stories) to the second floor. From the hallway on the second floor one opens the door to the room to find another regular staircase of normal height up to the living space of the room. This is NOT a room for anyone who doesn't do stairs well but if you don't mind a few stairs the views from the large windows and the private terrace are well worth it. The room itself has a double bed (OK with us as we are not large or tall people) a charming desk/vanity made from a slab of wood mounted on the base of an old Singer sewing machine, a little love seat and a bureau in the corner. The only thing we found lacking was that there were candle holders - complete with candles - on the two night stands. It was picturesque and romantic and all but I'd have preferred a bedside lamp. The bathroom is on the other side of the stairwell to the room, and you need to go two steps down from the room to a landing then two steps up to the bathroom again because of the way the main staircase comes into the room. For me that was no big deal but like I said previously, if you don't like stairs this is not the room for you. The water pressure up there is a little low, because the room is on the same level as the water storage tanks on the roof. Our friend on the ground level said his water pressure was fine, I was able to have a good shower but I wouldn't have shampooed my hair with that sort of water pressure. The private deck was lovely. It is furnished with a table and three chairs so was perfect for the three of us. We sat out there both nights of our stay sharing a bottle of wine, strawberries we'd bought from a stand on the highway and a box of brie we'd brought along from Costco. It was lovely. The other thing we really liked about this hotel was the secure parking for the Cherokee. Since it doesn't have a closed trunk like many cars do, even with the dark tinted windows in the back, we really prefer not to park on the street overnight when we have things in the back and we'd been shopping in Morelia and Tlalpujahua (the Magic town known for the glass Christmas ornaments) so we had stuff we didn't feel like hauling around in there and the secure parking saved us needing to do that. One thing to note, the parking is accessed from a side street not the street the front door of the hotel is on. The staff went out of their way to provide nice little touches that made it feel like they were really trying to make our visit special. In both rooms, not just the "bridal suite", cut flowers were set out in the bathroom and the bedroom both days of our stay, a rolled up letter of welcome tied with a ribbon was on the beds when we arrived and the towels were tied up with a colourful ribbon. Little details that I felt showed that they care about the impression they make and the comfort of the guests. Would I stay here again? Yes! Would I stay in the roof top room again? Absolutely! I'll request it! We felt that we received a warm welcome and really good value at the Shanarani.
