I think this place is over rated. The rooms were well maintained motel rooms. Noisy bathroom door. Small bathroom but big full size beds. The staff were accommodating. Love the butterfly center. Went and drove around the golf course. Visited the lake. Not much going on there. I like the fact that this place throw a free admission on Labor days and 911. They also have a free entrance to military personnel. On my opinion, It's an ok place but the butterfly center is a must see.
From April 23-April 29, 2013, I was at Callaway Gardens with my brother and his wife. We were celebrating my decade birthday and they were both with me and at business meetings. The facility offers many activities: Butterfly Center, Zip Lines, Beach, Water sports, Fishing, Bicycling, Beautiful walk trails, Golf, Tennis, and beautiful gardens. Accommodations were clean and very accessible. Food for all meals was very good. The staff was very helpful and courteous. We also enjoyed taking fun day trips that were not too far away including the winter home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It even had an interesting small museum that included fascinating historic information. Overall, it was a delightful visit for all of us.
Was there for a three day work related meeting and compared to a lot of locations, this one was much more attractive with a much more attentive staff. The regular rooms are OK, but the suites were very roomy with a choice of 3 balconies on which to sit. Kurig coffee maker, fridge, decent cable TV. All that said, not so sure I'd toss this into the list of where I'd stay on a budget, but for a middle Georgia get-away, with an upper end lodge atmosphere, this one is it.
We stayed for 2 nights over Labor Day weekend in a 2-bedroom cottage in the pine trees. Went with our young kids, and the setting was great for the kids - plenty of space in the cottage, a pool to take them to nearby, a kitchen for breakfasts upon waking, and a nearby lake (Robin's Beach) that was a constant party all weekend with hot air balloon rides, kids activities, and of course swimming. I agree with other reviews about the property not feeling very fancy - would place it at 3 star (out of 5) luxury - but the cottage we were in was clean and everything worked. Would happily return for another weekend trip. Another advantage of the cottages is that they are next to the Marriott Lodge in Callaway and my wife loved her spa visit there. On-site food options were mixed, but we did have a very good BBQ lunch at a place just outside the grounds called the Whistling Pig. Most of the staff we talked to were very helpful and pleasant. The cleaning team that came to our room was especially pleasant.
We have stayed here three times and all three stays have been about the same. For some unknown reason they do not have refrigerators for each room. You have to ask housekeeping after you arrive. We did get a fridge two out of three times but it seems silly to me. The rooms are OK. You will have to call housekeeping about something and , thankfully, they are very nice and respond quickly, usually. One stay we could not get coffee in our room so we bought our own. Rooms are far from soundproof. We could listen to the neighbors TV. The Friday night seafood buffet was terrible. They ran out of the good stuff very quickly. Table service (for drinks) was exceptionally slow. Still, if you are going to the gardens your choices are limited. We will probably go back given the limited choices.
I stayed at this resort two years ago and was disappointed regarding the condition of the room. I was leery at staying here again but a relative stated that most if not all rooms were remodeled or in the process of completion. I must say that the room I stayed in was much better than my previous experience. The room was clean and now included a flat screen HDTV and a larger closet for clothes. The room that I had included a small balcony in which one could see the lake in the distance. Much better experience. I hope the mgmt will continue to upgrade the resort since it does have the potential to become a premier resort in the Southeast but this takes commitment and investment by the owners which has not always been present recently according to locals that I talked to.
My husband and I went to Callaway Gardens for a long weekend trip. We took advantage of the Summer Family Package, which for $99 per night stay, included admission to the park and all of it's attractions. It was wonderful! If you're a nature lover, then you will enjoy the walking and biking trails, as well as all of the plants and animals. The Day Butterfly Center was something to see and we very much enjoyed the Memorial Chapel tucked deep in the woods, by a lake. We stayed in the Mountain Creek Inn, which has been newly renovated. I was a little worried, because I know it's the original hotel from the 60's, but it was very nice. Very clean with modern a decor. Large fitness center with state of the art machines. Big, clean pool. The staff was great! Every staff member, from the hotel, to the park to the Country Store Restaurant, were beyond friendly and helpful. The only improvement I could suggest, would be to have more restaurant options. While the park and surrounding area has several, outside of Callaway & into the town of Pine Mountain, not so much. This was a wonderful trip and I highly recommend it!
Callaway Gardens is always a great value and I enjoy coming here every few years. Spring is a great time to visit, because of all the azaleas, but I think summer is the best time to visit. They have great deals in the summer and you get more bang for your buck. Gardens and beach included. I stayed at the Mountain Creek Inn again. Comfy beds and newer decor. Room was dark, small but VERY clean. Need better lighting at least in bathroom/vanity area. The pool looked like it is in need of repair since the last time I visited. Also, I had to actually clean out the pool with the net myself since there were so many bugs, you couldn't even swim cause they were all over you. Restaurants are kinda pricey. The Discovery Cafe hummus and bagel chips was the best value. Every glass I was given at the Vineyards restaurant was dirty, but the food was a good size portion. Robin Lake beach is VERY nice and clean. I actually got in the lake because it was so clean. I think it might have been cleaner than the pool. Very relaxing. I like staying at Callaway because it feels very peaceful. The gardens are beautiful and serene.. Great family or couple destination and one of my favorites in Georgia.
My friend and I stayed here the night before we went to the Cotton Pickin' Fair. We arrived just before dinner. Our stay included a choice of some different items...we chose the cheese and fruit tray with a bottle of wine. It was a beautiful tray and the wine was wonderful. Our room was beautiful...overlooked a nice fountain area and pool in the distance. The small balcony was so cute. Loved the bathroom and room décor...just beautiful. The food at the restaurant for dinner and breakfast was delicious. Wish we could have stayed a second night. When we go to the festival next year, we are booking for both Friday and Saturday night. Loved this place!!
There is absolutely nothing negative about the gardens. We bought the travelzoo package $99 nightly which included 2hr canoeing, 2hr bicycling, 1hr tennis and the zipline adventure. All the gardens exhibits are included for free. The horticulture and butterfly exhibits are totally awesome the discovery zone has all the Callaway's (Cason and Virgina) history. What a beautiful place with a staff that treats everyone with true southern hospitality. We played golf and the courses are great, well manicured and enjoyably challenging. The bicycling is challeging if you not use to hills and lots of trails/hills. Mountain View Inn is average, clean, nice pool and a great workout room but we did not eat at the Inn meals were a little $$ more than we budgeted. The staff at the tennis facility are exceptionally nice and very accommodating with courts that are well maintained, even the the chipmunks are friendly. We dined at Eda Mae's Country Kitchen, The Aspen and Crickett's all were reasonable. If you want a good massage give Refresh Massage Therapy a call in Pine Mountain. We are definitely going back next year you cannot see everything in 4 days. Thank you Callaway for a much needed vacation.
